The award-winning film "Congo Boy," inspired by director Rafiki Fariala's own life as a refugee, has been acquired for U.S. distribution. The movie tells the story of Robert, a 17-year-old who fled the Democratic Republic of Congo. With his parents imprisoned, Robert navigates high school and cares for his four younger siblings, finding solace in music.
The film, which won Best Actor at Cannes' Un Certain Regard, is described as a "stirring musical drama" that "beats with the rhythms of resilience." "Congo Boy" is set to premiere at Toronto and will be released in U.S. theaters in the spring of 2027.
Fariala stated the film mirrors his own experience of his parents' imprisonment and music becoming his lifeline. He hopes the film will encourage audiences to view refugees differently and demonstrate that optimism is possible even in challenging circumstances.
This four-country co-production involves Makongo Films, Unité, Kiripifilms, and Karta Film. Internationally, The Party Film Sales is handling distribution, with sales already secured across Europe, Germany, Austria, France, and Brazil.
