Comedian's Jaw Injection Gone Wrong Leaves Her Unable to Smile

Comedian and podcast host Hannah Berner experienced a severe complication after receiving a jaw injection this past summer. The treatment, a Dysport injection aimed at alleviating TMJ symptoms, unexpectedly resulted in significant facial stiffness, leaving her unable to smile or speak properly.

Initially concerned about how this would impact her career, particularly upcoming filming and hosting duties, Berner decided to share her 'masseter massacre' with her podcast audience. Her fans, affectionately known as 'the gigglers,' found the situation highly amusing, with many likening her stiff smile to popular internet memes. This audience reaction led Berner to reframe her experience, finding humor in the predicament and even receiving lighthearted support from brands.

Berner's ordeal has also prompted reflection on societal expectations for women to constantly appear pleasant. She noted a personal realization about not always needing to smile in professional settings. Furthermore, she is now cautioning others, especially younger women, about the potential risks associated with cosmetic facial procedures, emphasizing the importance of self-care and embracing natural aging.

Despite exploring various treatments, including saunas and massages, Berner has learned that the effects of the injection may take up to six months to fully dissipate. As her smile gradually returns, Berner cherishes the connection made with her community through vulnerability, highlighting the core of her comedic work.
