Domingo expressed that he was unaware of Boseman's colon cancer diagnosis, which he had kept private since 2016. He considered the film a significant juncture in his own career.

Domingo further revealed that Boseman had been a steadfast supporter of his career, even encouraging others to watch Domingo's work in 2018.
