In "Ballad of a Small Player," Farrell portrays a gambling addict in the casino mecca of Macau, a high roller quickly running out of luck and breaking down both physically and mentally. Farrell was immediately drawn to the script, describing it as "beautiful" yet "disturbing" in its singular and dynamic nature. The role allowed him to lean into a character living in an "incredibly aggressive kind of spiritual or emotional vacuum."

Farrell's portrayal of the Penguin in Matt Reeves' "The Batman" also proved to be a transformative experience. Initially unsure about the director's take on the character, Farrell was blown away by the extraordinary makeup design by Mike Marino. The actor felt a sense of "possession" and being "overtaken" by the character, likening the experience to stepping into the lineage of legendary Hollywood makeup artists. Farrell's enthusiasm for Marino's work even led to the development of a spin-off Penguin series for HBO.
