Family Secrets Unravel in 'Closing Night'

Cody Fern's directorial debut, 'Closing Night,' has been noted for its thematic echoes of John Cassavetes' 'Opening Night.' The film initially adopts a style reminiscent of Pedro Almodóvar, focusing on tumultuous family relationships, but struggles with tonal consistency. Fern's frequent collaborator, Sarah Paulson, stars as Sandra Vale, a celebrated actress preparing for her Broadway return. Sandra invites her estranged family to her play's opening, including her sister April (Naomi Watts) and mother Diane (Dianne Wiest). April is hesitant but arrives, concerned for her son Theo (Toby Wallace), who has already connected with Sandra. The family reunion unearths long-buried secrets, including a pregnancy and the historical reason for Sandra's estrangement, which the film reveals in its final act.
