Australian artist CJ Hendry's exclusive pop-up events in Sydney are attracting a dedicated following, including international resellers aiming to profit from limited-edition merchandise. Attendees are traveling to acquire items like plush dolls and blind boxes, which are subsequently resold online at significantly inflated prices. For example, one eBay listing marked up a $39 blind box to $100, a gain of over 156%. An inflatable carry bag, given away free with purchases at the event, was listed for $403.50 plus shipping.
Hendry acknowledges the resale market, noting that such practices have occurred for decades and are part of the current economic landscape. However, she stresses that the in-person experience at her installations offers an invaluable 'vibe' and community connection that resellers cannot replicate. These events, particularly in an age dominated by online interactions, provide a unique opportunity for fans to connect and engage with the art and each other directly.
The "Juju & Friends" activation, in partnership with Pandora at Sydney's White Bay Cruise Terminal, runs from November 5 to November 8. Hendry is also launching her global "Flower Shop" installations, with tour dates scheduled in 14 cities worldwide, including Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney, and Perth in December. Entry to the "Juju & Friends" event is free.
