Citlali Fabián has been honored as Photographer of the Year 2026 at the prestigious Sony World Photography Awards. Her series, "Bilha, Stories of My Sisters," earned her the top prize in the Professional competition category. The project, created by a visual artist from the Indigenous Yalalteca community in Mexico, features photographic portraits enhanced with digital illustrations.
Fabián's work explores identity, territory, migration, and community, focusing on influential women from Indigenous communities across Oaxaca, Mexico. These women are making significant impacts in fields such as law, linguistics, arts, and ecology. The digital illustrations incorporate symbols and motifs that reflect their personal journeys and celebrate their rich cultural heritage.
The Sony World Photography Awards received over 430,000 image submissions from more than 200 countries and territories this year. Citlali Fabián also won first place in the Creative category and received a $25,000 cash prize, Sony digital imaging equipment, and an opportunity for a solo exhibition in 2027.
