22-Minute Ad Delay Costs Theatre Rs 75,000
28 Sep
Summary
- A cineplex was ordered to pay Rs 75,000 for delaying a movie start.
- Advertisements and trailers ran for approximately 22 minutes before the film.
- The delay caused inconvenience and led to a late arrival home for a patron.
A Hyderabad consumer commission has levied a Rs 75,000 penalty on a cineplex for significantly delaying a movie's start with excessive advertisements. On June 20, 2025, a patron purchased tickets for a 10:35 pm show, but commercial content ran until approximately 10:52 pm, a delay of around 22 minutes. This extended pre-show advertising was deemed an unfair trade practice by the commission.
The patron reported that the delay caused them to reach home significantly later than anticipated, by 3 am. The Hyderabad District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, in its final order on September 11, 2026, agreed with the complainant, highlighting that these advertisements were screened for commercial benefit. The theatre's defense that ads are part of business operations was not accepted.
The total penalty includes Rs 20,000 compensation to the complainant, Rs 5,000 for litigation costs, and Rs 50,000 as punitive damages to the District Consumer Welfare Fund. This punitive amount aims to deter the theatre from similar practices in the future.
