Christopher North, the founding keyboardist and a pivotal musical force behind the band Ambrosia, has died at the age of 75. The band confirmed his passing, noting his "brave and successful battle with throat cancer" which he overcame in the prior year.
North, celebrated as the "Hammond B3 King," was instrumental in shaping Ambrosia's distinctive "sonic architecture." His organ and piano performances provided both atmospheric depth and memorable solos on hits such as "Biggest Part of Me" and "You're the Only Woman (You & I)."
His musical journey began in San Francisco during the Sixties before co-founding Ambrosia in 1970. Despite stepping away briefly in 1977 due to health issues, North returned to help create the band's most commercially successful album, 1980's "One Eighty," which achieved gold certification.
Beyond Ambrosia, North contributed to albums by Chuck Girard and Tin Drum. He also appeared on a Doors tribute album in 2014, continuing his legacy as a versatile keyboardist.
