- This is Christie's first dedicated South Asian sale in London since 2019.

A significant auction of South Asian modern and contemporary art is slated for Christie's London, marking their first dedicated sale in this category since 2019. The "Sublime Shadows" collection, previewed in Mumbai from April 8th to 11th, includes celebrated artists such as Ganesh Pyne, Vasudev Gaitonde, and Biren De.
Ganesh Pyne's works, characterized by "poetic surrealism" drawing from Bengali folklore and mythology, are particularly rare at auction. This collection features tempera-on-canvas paintings and sketches from the 1970s, showcasing his unique visual language with sombre colours and cross-hatched layers.
Abstract masters Vasudev Gaitonde and Biren De are also prominently featured. Gaitonde's canvases exhibit atmospheric depth achieved through translucent and opaque oil layers, evoking a mood of reverie. Biren De's 1972 painting captures a cosmic echo with luminous zones, creating a meditative atmosphere through a unique interplay of light and colour.
The sale also includes figurative master Jogen Chowdhury's "Butterfly," alongside works by KK Hebbar, known for his modernist synthesis of figuration and abstraction, and Meera Mukherjee's bronze sculptures, which blend traditional Dhokra casting with modernist idioms and rural rhythms.
