These recognitions, including entry into the Congressional Record, were later met with an apology from a state representative to constituents. This apology cited Brown's history of domestic violence.

Brown reacted strongly to the apology, accusing the politician of "tap dancing" to avoid losing voters. He emphasized that the honor was initiated by others and that he was simply focused on his fans. He reiterated his desire to be left alone to concentrate on his music and supporters.
