China to Headline Rio Film Fest's 2026 Edition

In the upcoming 2026 edition of the Rio International Film Fest, China will be the festival's country focus as part of the China-Brazil Cultural Year. According to Walkiria Barbosa, the festival's executive director and international marketing head, the intention is to host the main Chinese film production companies, streamers, and exhibitors for a major business meeting and screenings of Chinese films.
The festival recently saw the premiere of "Shenzhou 13," China's first 8K film shot in space. The film, which was theatrically released in China in September 2025, depicts the routine of three Chinese astronauts during their record-breaking 183-day mission on the Shenzhou-13 spacecraft. The awe-inspiring footage was captured using 8K ultra-high-definition cameras, offering a unique glimpse into daily life in orbit.
In addition to the Chinese film showcase, the Rio Fest is also the platform for two Brazil-China co-production projects. The first is a 3D animated series called "Hoho & The Tropical Sound Clash," aimed at preschoolers, which is expected to premiere on free-to-air TV channels in Brazil and China in the second half of 2026. The second project is a 3D animated feature film titled "Amazonika - The Origin," which explores the ancient link between Asian and Brazilian Indigenous cultures.
