China's theatrical market experienced a substantial boom during the recent Lunar New Year holiday, grossing RMB4.47 billion ($647.4 million) over a six-day period. This surge was driven by a slate of new releases, temporarily making China the world's top-grossing film market for 2026.
"Pegasus 3" emerged as the leading film, capturing $369.3 million with its story of an underdog racing team. Following closely were Zhang Yimou's espionage thriller "Scare Out" and the martial arts epic "Blades of the Guardians," which earned $110.7 million and $97.3 million, respectively.
Animation title "Boonie Bears: The Hidden Protector" and Jackie Chan's "Panda Plan 2" also performed well. Despite a year-to-date revenue that was down compared to the previous year, the holiday's success has significantly boosted prospects for the upcoming spring season.
