Chilean Studio Quijote Films Expands to Spain, Boards Brazilian Dam Disaster Doc

In a move to strengthen its international presence, Chilean production company Quijote Films has set up an outpost in Madrid, Spain. The company has also boarded "Mariana x BHP," a Brazilian documentary that delves into the largest environmental lawsuit in history, following the devastating collapse of the Mariana dam in Brazil.
Developed over six years and filmed across 17 cities on three continents, the documentary features over 200 hours of footage. It won a cash prize at the Lau Haizetara Forum in San Sebastián and was recently presented to buyers and platforms at Madrid's 5 Iberseries & Platino Industria.
Quijote Films' Giancarlo Nasi, who has a long-standing connection to Brazil, said the company's collaboration with Brazilian partners has been "an incredible experience." Quijote is also a co-producer on the upcoming "A Colmeia," filmed in the Atacama Desert, and the 2025 Berlinale Silver Bear winner "The Blue Trail."
"Creating global content with international talent is part of our DNA," said Quijote producer Sergio Karmy, who noted that the company will be in production on projects with partners in Canada, Argentina, Mexico, and the U.S. next year. With "Mariana x BHP," Quijote aims to present a film with a strong identity that is "socially and politically resonant, yet with the potential to reach a wide audience."
