Fifteen-year-old Scarlet Thompson, of McAlester, Oklahoma, has won the Chickasaw Nation Butterfly Art Contest. Her winning artwork, inspired by the complementary colors found in traditional Chickasaw ribbon skirts, will be showcased as the featured piece for the 2026 Dynamic Women of the Chickasaw Nation Conference.
Thompson's design incorporates bold blues, golden yellows, magenta, and purple, accented with white and black. She drew significant inspiration from her studies at the Chickasaw Arts Academy, aiming to reflect her pride in her Chickasaw heritage.
The artwork, created with markers and colored pencils, includes subtle cultural symbols. Thompson expressed deep pride in her Chickasaw identity and a desire to honor the traditions passed down through generations. She was delighted to learn of her win and the prominent display of her art.
Thompson cited her mother, Tiara Thompson, as a major role model. Tiara's advocacy for children with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS), including writing books about the experience, deeply influences Scarlet. Scarlet also noted her parents' unwavering support for her artistic endeavors, even amid her brother Azrael's health challenges.
