Chicago Lakefront Concerts: A Free Summer Vibe

Chicago's lakefront has become an impromptu concert venue, attracting hundreds with a series of free, pop-up shows. This phenomenon began last summer when Tanner Dane and his band, Hollyy, started busking near Belmont Harbor. Their monthly performances, held on concrete slabs by the Aids Garden, feature a unique mix of indie rock and old soul music.

Dane and his bandmates, comprising friends from his hometown and college, use solar-powered batteries to keep their equipment running, allowing them to bring their music anywhere. The concerts, which are free and advertised via social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram, have seen attendance grow significantly since their initial gathering of around 100 people.

The events have cultivated a devoted following, with attendees often seen enjoying elaborate picnics and even taking a dip in the lake. This creates a festive atmosphere reminiscent of larger outdoor venues. While the band has had minor interactions regarding permits, they continue to operate as buskers, aiming to provide Chicagoans with a quintessential summer experience. They plan to return next year, capitalizing on the city's desire for outdoor entertainment.
