The Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Maestro William Intriligator, is set to perform "This Land is Your Land," a concert designed to showcase the rich diversity of American composers and musical styles. This program intentionally highlights works from underrepresented groups, including African-American, women, and Jewish composers, aiming to celebrate the freedom and creativity inherent in American music.
The concert's repertoire spans a wide range of American sounds. It opens with Ellen Taaffe Zwilich's "Celebration," a piece fitting for the upcoming U.S. 250th anniversary. Following this, the orchestra will feature two compositions by Argentinian-American composer Lalo Schifrin: his "Tuba Concerto" and the iconic "Mission Impossible Theme." These pieces will be performed with guest soloist Gene Pokorny, a renowned tubist and friend of Schifrin. The program continues after intermission with the "Omar Overture" by Rhiannon Giddens and Michael Abels, a fresh work from the Pulitzer Prize-winning opera "Omar." The concert will conclude with Leonard Bernstein's "Symphonic Dances" from "West Side Story," a piece that embodies a spunky, youthful, and distinctly American quality.
