Chennai Sangamam 2026, a cultural festival spearheaded by MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, concluded its four-day run on January 18th. The event, held across 20 locations in Chennai from January 15th to 18th, celebrated Tamil Nadu's rural heritage and showcased art forms from various Indian states, notably from the Northeast.
This year's edition featured a unique fashion show where gaana singers and folk artistes, custodians of grassroots heritage, walked the ramp. They showcased diverse handloom creations, including Kanchipuram silks and Sungudi saris, drawing extensive references from Sangam literature's emphasis on clothing. This initiative aimed to promote local weavers' works through unexpected cultural ambassadors.
The festival buzzed with performances, including the Mising dance from Assam and the Lai Haraoba dance from Manipur, symbolizing creation and prosperity. Approximately 1,500 artistes participated, engaging audiences who not only admired the performances but also interacted with the artists, turning the event into an educative platform for students and visitors alike.
