A triumphant gardener has won a gold medal at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, describing the victory as a "shock." Brantwood's National Plant Collection of Wisteria, in collaboration with Fiona Butcher of Cumbria Wisteria, secured the top floral honour. The exhibition eloquently showcased the natural beauty of the Lake District fells alongside the charm of wisteria.
Head gardener Simone Daye revealed that the team dedicated six to eight months to prepare the display. She expressed her astonishment upon seeing the gold certificate and medal. Daye highlighted that wisteria thrives in Coniston due to its love for humidity, and careful consideration of the weather was crucial for optimal blooming.
The winning display featured a dry-stone wall meticulously recreated by University of Cumbria graduate Joe Evans. Evans described the process of building the wall at Brantwood, dismantling it, and transporting it to Chelsea. He expressed satisfaction with the final look, which included moss and ferns, acknowledging the team's hard work.
