Sony Pictures is actively developing a new feature film based on the iconic "Charlie's Angels" franchise. Drew Barrymore's Flower Films is attached to produce the upcoming movie, continuing their involvement with the beloved property. Screenwriter Pete Chiarelli, who previously penned "The Proposal," has been tasked with writing the script for this latest iteration.
The "Charlie's Angels" saga originates from a popular late 1970s television series. The show centered on three female detectives operating under a mysterious benefactor named Charlie. The series starred Farrah Fawcett, Kate Jackson, and Jaclyn Smith, with cast changes including Cheryl Ladd and Tanya Roberts over its run.
More recently, the franchise was reimagined for the big screen in 2000 by director McG, starring Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, and Lucy Liu. A sequel, "Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle," followed in 2003. Sony attempted television revivals in 2011 and a 2019 film directed by Elizabeth Banks, though these did not achieve significant box office success.
Chiarelli's other notable writing credits include "Crazy Rich Asians" and "Now You See Me 2." He also contributed to Sony Pictures Animation's new feature "GOAT."
