- Its legacy continues to influence the International Film Festival of Kerala.

In 1976, four admin staff at Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) in Thiruvananthapuram, bonded by a shared love for cinema, founded Chalachitra. What started as informal discussions about films evolved into a full-fledged film society dedicated to bringing movie aficionados together through monthly screenings. This initiative successfully built a community that is now celebrating its 50th anniversary.
The society's inception was marked by a dynamic seven-day film festival, showcasing acclaimed films like G Aravindan's 'Uttarayam' and Satyajit Ray's 'Devi'. Films were sourced from the National Film Development Corporation and even foreign embassies. Following this successful launch, Chalachitra organized a Mrinal Sen retrospective, featuring seven of his films, including the future Golden Lotus winner 'Mrigaya'.
Initially screening films at Tagore Theatre, the society later organized the Trivandrum International Film Festival from 1996 to 2013. Chalachitra also published 'Close Look', a respected magazine on world cinema. Though film societies saw a decline with the advent of television, Chalachitra's founders and members recently celebrated its 50-year milestone, underscoring its lasting cultural impact.
