Nearly six years after actor Chadwick Boseman's death, his widow, Simone Ledward Boseman, has revealed new insights into his private battle with colon cancer. The diagnosis, which came in 2016 when Boseman was just 43, was sudden and unexpected for both him and his wife.
Initially diagnosed with Stage 3 colon cancer, Boseman and Ledward Boseman were confident in his recovery, expecting surgery and subsequent chemotherapy to suffice. They found it difficult to discuss the possibility of him not surviving, which Ledward Boseman described as feeling like a betrayal of faith.
In 2018, Chadwick Boseman experienced a period of being cancer-free, which his wife called "a beautiful year." However, by the end of that year, the cancer had progressed to Stage 4.
Boseman chose to keep his health struggles private, and Ledward Boseman explained that he did not want to be treated differently due to his illness. He continued to work, finding that his career motivated him and he didn't want his health to impact his ability to perform.
Reflecting on grief nearly six years later, Ledward Boseman noted that while the pain lessens, it doesn't disappear, and she has become more accustomed to carrying the weight of it.
