Carl Cox: Glasgow's Arches Was My Home

Legendary DJ Carl Cox, with over four decades in the global music scene, regards Glasgow's Arches nightclub as a former "home." He recently spoke about his deep connection to the venue, lamenting its 2015 closure. Cox believes the Arches' demise was a substantial loss for Glasgow and the broader dance music community.

The Arches closed after Glasgow's licensing board mandated a midnight curfew, a decision stemming from police reports of drug abuse and disorder. Despite subsequent uses as other nightlife spots, plans are now in motion to transform the space into a bowling bar.

Cox is scheduled to return to Scotland in May to headline the Pavilion festival in Ayrshire. This event, now in its fourth year, is curated by DJ Ewan McVicar and STREETrave. Cox previously worked with these promoters decades ago and expressed enthusiasm for his upcoming performance.

Reflecting on his career, Cox highlighted the significant changes in the music industry, contrasting the current ease of access to music with the past necessity of physically attending venues like the Arches. He emphasized his adaptability, jokingly calling himself "the most professional goalpost mover in music," comfortable shifting between genres.

Regarding the challenges facing the wider nightlife sector, Cox offered a thoughtful perspective on the idea of a government minister dedicated to nightlife. He suggested that true understanding of dance music promotion must come from within the scene itself, from individuals who grasp its core essence.
