In a major announcement, Netflix has revealed plans for an upcoming 8-episode series that will delve into the captivating history of the Kennedy family. The series, titled "Kennedy," is set to star acclaimed actor Michael Fassbender as the family patriarch, Joe Kennedy Sr.
The series will be based on Fredrik Logevall's acclaimed book "JFK: Coming of Age in the American Century, 1917-1956," which explores the formative years of President John F. Kennedy. According to the official logline, the series will chart the "improbable ascent of Joe and Rose Kennedy and their nine children, including rebellious second son Jack, who struggles to escape the shadow of his golden boy older brother."
Showrunner Sam Shaw has described the Kennedy family's story as akin to "American mythology," falling "somewhere between Shakespeare and The Bold and the Beautiful." He promises the series will pull back the veil on the family's human struggles and burdens, revealing insights into the present day as much as the Kennedys themselves.
With filming already underway, the Netflix series announcement comes as another high-profile Kennedy project, Ryan Murphy's "American Love Story," is also in production. That series will explore the whirlwind romance between JFK Jr. and Carolyn Bessette.
