Apple's adaptation of "Cape Fear" immerses viewers in a palpable Southern heat, meticulously crafted to feel like a waking nightmare. Cinematographers aimed for an atmosphere drenched in oppressive heat, reminiscent of classic films like "Body Heat."
Though the series filmed only one day in Savannah, Georgia, Atlanta served as its primary stand-in. Production designer Jamie Walker McCall faced the challenge of replicating Savannah's unique lushness and topography in Atlanta, a city with distinct physical characteristics. McCall's team trucked in Spanish moss to achieve the authentic look.
McCall focused on making locations feel intimate yet haunted, mirroring Savannah's vibe. Sets for the Bowden family home were designed to reflect its history and the family's place within it. To deepen character portrayal, McCall incorporated elements inspired by the actors, such as Patrick Wilson's marathon medals and personal workout equipment.
Designs for antagonist Max Cady's North Carolina home contrasted sharply, featuring an overgrown, unkempt quality to reflect the family's volatile nature. A bedroom set for Bowden's daughter, Natalie, was designed as a direct homage to a similar scene in the 1991 film adaptation.
