Director Braved Child Porn Scandal for New Film

Marie Kreutzer's latest film, "Gentle Monster," which is set to debut at Cannes, tackles the sensitive subject of child pornography. The director began working on the script prior to the widely publicized charges against actor Florian Teichtmeister for possession of child pornography, who was a lead in her earlier film "Corsage."

Kreutzer was inspired to create "Gentle Monster" after reading an explicit newspaper article in 2020. The film follows a singer-pianist whose life unravels as her husband, a filmmaker, is investigated for possessing child pornography. Despite initial concerns that the real-life scandal might overshadow her film, Kreutzer decided to proceed, believing it amplified the importance of her work.

The film's central theme, according to Kreutzer, is honesty, particularly confronting shame that leads individuals and society to turn a blind eye to difficult truths. She emphasizes that perpetrators can be trusted individuals, not just stereotypical villains. The narrative also explores how women in the story often attempt to manage or fix the lives of the men around them.

Supporting subplots in "Gentle Monster" mirror the central theme. A policewoman struggles to confront her father's harassment of a caregiver, illustrating how people may choose to look away to maintain ease in their lives. The film also highlights women's struggles for independence within relationships and careers, a theme informed by Kreutzer's own experiences balancing work and motherhood.
