Canal+ Group's recent acquisitions across two continents have been instrumental in solidifying its position amid significant industry changes, according to CEO Anna Marsh. Speaking at MIA Market in Rome, Marsh noted the necessity of fresh perspectives to challenge the status quo in a rapidly evolving media landscape influenced by AI and market consolidation.
The French media giant has strategically expanded its influence, most recently acquiring a majority stake in Rome-based Lucky Red and a 34 percent stake in Paris-headquartered UGC. These moves follow the group's $2 billion takeover of South African pay-TV company MultiChoice, significantly boosting its subscriber base to over 40 million, with a strong presence across Africa.
Marsh expressed confidence in Europe's storytelling capabilities, citing the rich culture and history as a foundation for future success. Studiocanal, a key part of Canal+'s strategy, is focusing on adapting existing intellectual property, like the successful 'Paddington' franchise, to capitalize on built-in audiences and inform decision-making.
Despite the inherent challenges of the current market, where audience expectations are continually rising, Marsh pointed to upcoming projects like the Martin Scorsese-directed film, as potentially strong performers. However, she acknowledged the increasing difficulty in achieving widespread success, noting there is 'no room for error,' particularly with Gen Z audiences.
