Filmmaker's Playful Eye Captures Growing Up on Film

The 22nd Camden International Film Festival, currently midway through its run in mid-coast Maine, is presenting a diverse array of documentaries. The festival is scheduled to continue through Sunday, featuring world premieres and works from acclaimed filmmakers.
Among the highlights is Alessandra Sanguinetti's "The Illusion of an Everlasting Summer." This documentary, which debuted at the Locarno Film Festival, intimately chronicles the lives of cousins Guillermina "Guile" Aranciaga and Belinda "Beli" Stutz over a quarter-century. Sanguinetti, an Argentinian photographer, initially intended to photograph farm animals but was drawn to the girls, eventually shifting her medium to film.
Sanguinetti described her transition from still photography to filmmaking as a means to capture the subjects' voices and actions more authentically, moving from a "dictator" role to feeling part of their lives. The film's narrative developed organically during the editing process, revealing patterns and self-prophesying elements in the protagonists' lives.
The festival also features new films from renowned directors such as Alex Gibney, Laura Poitras, Barbara Kopple, and Luke Lorentzen, many of which premiered recently at the Venice Film Festival. Awards, including the $10,000 Fowlie Award for audience choice, will be presented on Sunday.
