Callie Khouri: From Oscar to Stage Musical

Callie Khouri, the Academy Award-winning screenwriter behind "Thelma & Louise," has embarked on a new venture, adapting her debut film into a musical theatre production. The acclaimed writer, who also created the TV series "Nashville," now hopes her "beginner's luck" extends to the stage with this challenging adaptation.

The "Thelma & Louise" musical, which has been in development for a decade, recently premiered at London's Young Vic. Khouri collaborated with composer Neko Case and choreographer Bobbi Jene Smith for this new iteration. While retaining core elements, the production introduces new scenes and a distinct artistic approach, aiming to preserve the element of surprise for audiences.

Reflecting on the film's 1991 release, Khouri expressed a wish that its themes of casual sexism and serious assault were no longer as prevalent. She voiced concerns about the rollback of women's rights in the United States, describing it as "barbaric." Despite industry progress, Khouri acknowledged the ongoing challenges and backlash faced by movements like #MeToo.

Khouri finds joy in her current work, contrasting it with the increasing algorithmic focus of film and television. She views the musical adaptation as an opportunity to "elevate" the story for the stage. Having written and directed other projects, she feels "called" to tell the "Thelma & Louise" story anew, discovering a fresh perspective through the musical medium.
