Comedian's personal journey fuels indie film 'Trash Mountain'

Caleb Hearon, a comedian and performer, has channeled his rural Midwestern upbringing into his most personal project to date, the indie film 'Trash Mountain.' Co-written by and starring Hearon, the movie is directed by Kris Rey.

'Trash Mountain' follows Gavin, a gay man residing in Chicago, who returns to his small Missouri hometown following the death of his hoarder father. Together with his half-sister, portrayed by Zooey Deschanel, Gavin confronts the challenging task of clearing out their father's estate.

The film draws inspiration from Hearon's own experiences when his father passed away unexpectedly several years prior. This led Hearon to write the screenplay as a cathartic exercise, eventually leading to the production of 'Trash Mountain' with producers Colin Trevorrow and Lilly Wachowski.

Hearon, who has an established career in television, podcasts, and stand-up, took on the lead role for the first time in 'Trash Mountain.' The production process was characteristic of indie filmmaking, involving a tight 18-day shooting schedule and unique challenges, such as filming in public spaces. The film highlights the complex relationship between siblings and the emotional weight of family legacies.
