Soul Whisperer Faces War's Shadow at Busan Fest

Leo Thaddeus's directorial debut, "Chevittormma (The Soul Whisperer)," has earned a coveted spot in the Busan International Film Festival's 'A Window on Asian Cinema' program. The film, inspired by a poignant childhood memory from Thaddeus's hometown in Thrissur, explores the sensitive theme of a person's passing.

Set in contemporary times, the narrative features Pauly Valsan as Thresia and Dileesh Pothen as Varkeychan, the man nearing his end. Thaddeus praised Valsan's performance, noting her character's significant arc, and commended Pothen's portrayal of a physically limited 75-year-old.

The film's international crew faced a harrowing ordeal when Iranian composer Milad Movahedi found himself caught in the midst of war during post-production. For nearly two weeks, the team was uncertain of his safety. Movahedi eventually relocated to Turkey to continue his work, later returning to Tehran.

Thaddeus described Movahedi's dedication as extraordinary, highlighting the immense risks taken to deliver musical pieces amid communication blackouts. The composer was, as Thaddeus put it, "literally staring down the barrel of a gun" while completing the score.

"Chevittormma" is being recognized internationally for its meditative quality and its journey through human emotions. Thaddeus believes forgiveness is paramount, and the film serves as a reflection on achieving a peaceful end, carrying with it a profound message about life itself.
