Burning Man 2026 Theme Unveiled: Axis Mundi to Connect Global Community
3 Oct
Summary
- Burning Man 2026 theme is "axis mundi," the center of the world
- Theme aims to reflect Burning Man's "convening force" and shared values
- Organizer Stuart Mangrum designed the theme to unite global participants

In October 2025, Burning Man organizers unveiled the theme for the 2026 event, set to take place from August 30 to September 6 in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada. The theme, "axis mundi," refers to the ancient concept of a cosmic center or "world tree" that connects people to greater powers.
According to Burning Man's announcement, this theme was chosen to reflect the event's "convening force" and the ways it brings together a global community around shared values. Organizer Stuart Mangrum, who has led the theme selection process since 2019, says the theme celebrates how Burning Man creates a "separate reality fueled by values we believe in: creativity, generosity, inclusivity and everything else that's implicit in our Principles."
The "axis mundi" concept has manifested in various forms across cultures, from the Maya's Ceiba tree to the Norse Yggdrasil. Mangrum notes that Burning Man's iconic wooden "Man" effigy can be seen as the event's own version of this cosmic pillar, a "Jacob's Ladder connecting us to the unseen and unknowable."
With participants from over 100 countries, Burning Man aims to be a unifying force in an increasingly divided world. Mangrum acknowledges that the theme is a response to the "shooting wars, culture wars, the forces of division" permeating global politics and culture. By embracing the axis mundi concept, the 2026 event seeks to bring people together in "authentic ways, in real life, to create experiences together."
