Peacock is developing a 2026 series adaptation of Joe Dante's 1989 dark comedy "The 'Burbs," starring Jack Whitehall and Keke Palmer. The new series reimagines the original film, bringing its suburban suspense into the modern age.
Production designer Susie Mancini detailed the efforts to transform the familiar Colonial Street at Universal Studios, a frequently used filming location. The goal was to make the set distinct from its many previous appearances while maintaining a believable neighborhood atmosphere. Mancini also focused on infusing the interior designs of the houses with unique personalities for the characters.
The story centers on a newly married couple, Whitehall and Palmer, who relocate to his childhood town, only for their staycation to be disrupted by mysterious new neighbors. This adaptation aims to capture the spirit of the original Tom Hanks-starrer with a contemporary twist.
