Bungie's Marathon Not Yet a Success, Says Industry Veteran
20 Mar
Summary
- Marathon's development cost and scale challenge market viability.
- The game has a dedicated player base but faces financial uncertainty.
- An industry veteran suggests Bungie is stretched thin and reacting.

Former Microsoft Game Studios executive Laura Fryer has stated that Bungie's recently released extraction shooter, Marathon, is not yet considered a success from a business perspective. While the game has garnered a dedicated player base and positive initial reviews, Fryer points to its substantial development cost and scale as major hurdles.
Fryer commented that Marathon was 'built at a scale and cost that the current market simply isn't rewarding.' Although the game maintains a decent player count on PC, estimated to have earned around $22 million post-Steam's cut, it has not achieved breakout success. This financial performance is a concern for Bungie and its parent company, Sony.
The industry veteran also highlighted potential issues within Bungie, suggesting the team is 'stretched thin' and 'leadership is reacting instead of planning ahead.' This is underscored by Bungie's cancellation of a GDC appearance to focus on the game, a move Fryer deemed smart but indicative of broader team pressures.
Fryer drew parallels to the harsh realities of the gaming business, referencing an ultimatum given to Overwatch's former director regarding revenue targets. She emphasized that while revenue is crucial for live service games, arbitrary financial demands from leadership removed from game development can be detrimental. Ultimately, Fryer concluded that while Marathon is not 'dead' and has a strong core, Bungie faces a 'very big hill to climb' to realize the game's full potential and justify its investment.
