BTS China Tour Snub: K-Pop's China Ban Lingers

As the globally recognized K-pop group BTS launches a new world tour, one significant market, China, is conspicuously absent. This exclusion is not surprising, given China's unofficial ban on South Korean entertainment, which has been in place since 2016 and affects movies and television dramas. The ban was a response to South Korea's decision to host a U.S. anti-missile system, known as THAAD, which China viewed as a security threat.

Analysts suggest that China's extended use of this cultural blockade is also due to government concerns about the immense popularity of Korean music and videos, viewing them as a potential threat to its own cultural products and the development of its domestic entertainment industry. While the ban is not absolute, allowing some K-pop acts with non-Korean members and older content to be accessible, major platforms like Netflix and Disney+ remain blocked, and recent dramas are often pirated.
