The Brooklyn Museum is embarking on a significant $13 million renovation project to establish new, dedicated galleries for its extensive Arts of Africa collection. This initiative, slated for completion in fall 2027, aims to showcase these masterworks with the dignity they deserve.
Led by Brooklyn-based architects Peterson Rich Office, the new 6,400-square-foot space will house approximately 300 pieces from the museum's over 4,500-item collection, representing 2,500 years of history. Notably, these galleries will be physically linked to the museum's Ancient Egyptian art collection.
This integration is intended to correct the long-standing art historical separation of Egypt from the rest of the continent. Museum director Anne Pasternak highlighted the importance of this change, noting that such divisions can be perceived as racist, especially in diverse communities like Brooklyn.
