Diva Rivalry: Bennett's New Novel Explores Fame's Price

Brit Bennett, acclaimed author of 'The Vanishing Half,' is set to release her third novel, 'The Last Diva,' in the summer of 2027. This new work promises an intimate and epic exploration of fame's true cost through the lens of a decades-long rivalry.

The novel centers on Roz Randall as she reflects on the life of her deceased rival, Cleo Wright. Their story begins in 1963 as teenagers forming a singing group, their shared ambition forging a powerful bond that fuels their rise to stardom.

However, their friendship eventually succumbs to envy and competition, splintering their paths while they remain consumed by each other. Bennett’s narrative will delve into the complexities of such relationships, questioning who truly owns a star's secrets after their performance ends.

Bennett, a millennial, was inspired by the "golden age of divas" and the tragic trajectories often accompanying their fame. Her research into celebrity biographies highlighted how these accounts, often written by men, could be unreliable narratives of Black women's inner lives, prompting her to explore myth-making and control over one's own story.

The book will also confront the "toxic, misogynist pop culture of the aughts," which deeply influenced Bennett's coming-of-age. She observes the public's fascination with female celebrities' ascents and subsequent falls, questioning why society often revels in women's humiliation.

'The Last Diva' is scheduled for publication on June 8, 2027, by Riverhead Books and is currently available for preorder.
