Bridgerton Costumes: Evolution of Elegance & Sex Appeal

Bridgerton's continued success, now in its fourth season, is significantly attributed to its lavish costume design. Lead costume designer John Glaser shared that over 700 unique costumes were created by a department of more than 100 people for the latest season. This season introduces an evolution in elegance and sex appeal, notably in the attire of the downstairs staff, which has been elevated to balance with the upstairs opulence.

Associate costume designer Dougie Hawkes discussed how Benedict Bridgerton's costumes reflect his artistic and exploratory nature, with a particularly noteworthy scene referencing an iconic lakeside moment from a 1995 BBC adaptation. Hawkes detailed the meticulous effort to recreate and evolve this scene, focusing on the details of Benedict's attire. The new season also brings the lives of the household staff into sharper focus, with their costumes designed to be more elegant and alluring.

Lady Violet Bridgerton receives a stylistic transformation this season, moving towards softer, sexier styles as she explores a new romance. Assistant costume designer George Sayer explained the intention to reflect her blossoming narrative through her wardrobe.
