Brian May, guitarist for the legendary band Queen, recalled confronting Freddie Mercury about the lyric "travelling at the speed of light" in their popular song "Don't Stop Me Now." May, a qualified astrophysicist, expressed his scientific inaccuracy concerns to Mercury.
Mercury, however, dismissed the objection, emphasizing the song's focus on fun and joy. The track, featured on Queen's 1978 album 'Jazz,' became a significant hit, reaching number nine on the UK singles chart. Despite its enduring success, May revealed Mercury initially envisioned the song primarily as a piano piece.
May explained that Mercury desired a "powerhouse" piano and vocal performance, akin to Elton John's style. Although initially disappointed by Mercury's resistance to his guitar contributions, May ultimately got to perform his celebrated solo after Mercury requested him to "take over the vocal" for a section.
Brian May continues to honor Queen's legacy alongside drummer Roger Taylor, having toured with Adam Lambert from 2012. Beyond his musical career, May holds a PhD in astrophysics, advocates for animal welfare, and collects historical artifacts. He once described himself as always moving, juggling his diverse passions with energy.
