In a surprising move, Universal Pictures is reportedly in talks with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz to star in a new sequel to the popular Mummy franchise. The original trilogy, released between 1999 and 2008, was a major box office success, launching Fraser into leading man status.
The new film will be directed by the acclaimed horror duo of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who recently helped revitalize the Scream franchise. They will be working alongside original Mummy producer Sean Daniel, who is returning to the franchise.
Details on the plot are still scarce, but the new sequel is not expected to be a reboot, instead continuing the story from the previous films and disregarding the events of the third movie. Screenwriter David Coggeshall has been tapped to pen the screenplay.
The return of Fraser and Weisz, who starred in the first two Mummy movies, is sure to excite fans of the franchise. Both actors have seen career resurgences in recent years, with Fraser earning an Oscar for his acclaimed performance in The Whale and Weisz appearing in the Amazon Prime series Dead Ringers and the Marvel film Black Widow.
