Skydance Animation's "Ray Gunn," directed by acclaimed filmmaker Brad Bird, is scheduled for release. The film will premiere at the BFI London Film Festival on October 10, followed by a global debut on Netflix on December 18. Bird, known for "Ratatouille" and "The Incredibles," has conceptualized "Ray Gunn" for approximately three decades.
The inspiration for the noir detective caper, set in a retro-future, came from listening to The B-52s' "Planet Claire." Bird envisioned a blend of classic detective themes with a science fiction twist. The project, originally conceived as a potential Pixar film, found its home with Skydance Animation, which was open to exploring animation for older audiences.
"Ray Gunn" features a score by composer Michael Giacchino, a longtime collaborator of Bird's, with recording sessions held at Abbey Road Studios. The film's narrative centers on a private detective uncovering a plot involving a superstar singer. Bird has noted that the film's themes of art, technology, and corporate greed remain relevant from its initial conception decades ago.
