The musical collective Boygenius, formed by Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus, has released their highly anticipated debut album, 'The Record.' This project is a profound exploration of their deep connection, with each artist enhancing the others' creative output and emotional resonance.
Their collaborative spirit, which began with Baker spotting Dacus reading and a subsequent online kinship with Bridgers, led to the formation of Boygenius. The trio booked a triple bill in 2018, intending to record one song but emerging with six. This initial EP solidified their ineffable bond, which Bridgers described as "falling in love."
The album challenges patriarchal norms in music by showcasing genuine affection between women, a concept poet Adrienne Rich explored. 'The Record' features contributions from Melina Duterte, Carla Azar, Sarah Tudzin, and Catherine Marks. Additionally, writer Elif Batuman penned an introductory essay, and Kristen Stewart directed three music videos for the project.
The opening track, "With You Without Them," serves as a hymn reflecting on history and inheritance. It features harmonies reminiscent of the EP's closer, "Ketchum, ID," and expresses gratitude to preceding generations. The song highlights their desire to be part of a shared lineage, with the trio singing, "Give me everything you've got/I'll take what I can get."
