Insidious Spinoff Underperforms Franchise Expectations

Sony/Blumhouse's 'Insidious: Out of the Further' generated $3 million in previews, a softer opening compared to the franchise's previous chapter, 'Insidious: Red Door,' which had earned $5 million in previews and opened to $33 million in July 2023. The current outlook for 'Out of the Further' anticipates a weekend total of $23M-$27M from 3,303 theaters.

In contrast, 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' is projected to hold the top spot for its fourth weekend, likely earning around $35 million. The film has accumulated $815.9 million domestically, demonstrating stronger performance than 'Avengers: Endgame' at the same point in its release.

The Jacob Chase-written and directed 'Insidious: Out of the Further' is a spinoff featuring only Lin Shaye from the core cast. It follows a mother who can enter 'The Further.' Critically, the film holds a 58% score on Rotten Tomatoes, which is an improvement over 'Red Door's' 40%, but below the original 2010 film's 60%.

Lionsgate's R-rated 'Mutiny,' starring Jason Statham, brought in $700K in previews and is estimated to earn single-digit millions over the weekend from 2,703 theaters. Directed by Jean-François Richet, the film has received a 48% Rotten Tomatoes rating from critics.

Other films opening in the low single digits include Vertical's 'The Magic Faraway Tree' and Black Bear's R-rated comedy 'Spa Weekend,' with 'The Magic Faraway Tree' showing in 1,611 theaters and 'Spa Weekend' in 2,009 locations.
