The Box, a museum and art gallery in Devon, has celebrated an extraordinary year, exceeding its annual visitor target by 18%. This represents a significant 44% increase in attendance compared to the prior year, with 356,000 visits recorded for the 2025/2026 season. These impressive figures surpassed the target of 300,000 visits.
The success is largely attributed to popular exhibitions such as 'Beryl Cook: Pride and Joy' and 'Journeys with Mai'. The Beryl Cook exhibition, in particular, drew substantial crowds, with a notable 45% of its visitors traveling from various parts of the country. This exhibition alone welcomed 52,000 visitors.
The 'Journeys with Mai' exhibition, which showcased the story of Mai, the first Pacific Islander to visit Britain, and featured Sir Joshua Reynolds' portrait of Mai, also contributed to the museum's success, attracting approximately 25,000 visitors. The museum's free admission policy continues to make art and culture accessible.
