Bowen Yang's Broadway Debut: A 'Deranged Masterpiece'

Bowen Yang is set to make his Broadway debut, starring as the title character in Cole Escola's acclaimed comedy, "Oh, Mary!" Yang will perform a limited 12-week engagement at the Lyceum Theatre in New York City, beginning September 15. He previously declined the role last year due to commitments with Saturday Night Live, explaining he needed more time to approach the debut with the "utmost seriousness and gravitas."

Months after concluding his tenure on SNL, Yang revisited "Oh, Mary!" and found renewed resonance, seeing parallels between Mary's struggles and his own transitional phase post-SNL. The show, which imagines Mary Todd Lincoln as a boozy cabaret star, has become a significant Broadway success since its July 11, 2024 opening. It notably became the first show in its venue's 121-year history to gross over $1 million in a single week and was the first production of the 2024-25 season to recoup its investment.

The production is known for its rotating cast of prominent actors taking on the Mary role. Yang joins a list of notable performers who have previously starred in the show. His casting is anticipated to bring a new, intense energy to the character, with Yang aiming to explore a more masculine interpretation of Mary's delusions of grandeur. The show's success extends internationally with a London production winning the Olivier Award for Best New Entertainment or Comedy Play in 2026, and plans for a North American tour and a filmed stage capture are also underway.
