Ghajini: Salman Khan Was Boney Kapoor's First Choice
22 Dec
Summary
- Boney Kapoor envisioned Salman Khan for Ghajini's lead role.
- Remake rights delays cost Kapoor the project he wanted.
- Aamir Khan eventually produced and starred in the film.

Producer Boney Kapoor recently shared a significant "what if" scenario from his career, expressing his regret over missing the opportunity to remake the film Ghajini. He had long envisioned Salman Khan in the lead role, believing the actor's appearance in 'Tere Naam' made him an ideal candidate for the character of an amnesiac businessman.
Kapoor's plans were stalled when securing the Hindi remake rights proved challenging. His representative discovered the rights were held as collateral, requiring payment to multiple parties. This bureaucratic hurdle led to months of uncertainty and negotiation, during which Aamir Khan was exposed to the original Tamil film.
Ultimately, Aamir Khan decided to proceed with the remake, partnering with Madhu Mantena and Allu Aravind to produce it. Kapoor, who had been kept waiting, lost out on the project he had intended for Salman Khan. He also recalled a separate instance where Salman Khan did a special appearance in 'Sirf Tum' for free as a goodwill gesture.
