5 Mar
Summary
- Court questions AI's ability to simulate personalities without consent.
- Shilpa Shetty's suit concerns misuse of image and voice via AI.
- Platform directed to file a detailed reply on AI usage.

The Bombay High Court has raised significant questions regarding the legality of Artificial Intelligence tools that simulate celebrity personalities without consent. During the hearing of a personality rights suit filed by actor Shilpa Shetty Kundra, the court questioned the right of online platforms to allow users to interact with AI versions of celebrities without explicit permission.
The court, presided over by Justice Sharmila Deshmukh, inquired how AI platforms could create and offer simulated celebrity personalities to the public without authorization. This development stems from Shilpa Shetty's suit alleging misuse of her image, voice, and likeness through deepfake and AI-generated content.
Earlier, a vacation bench had ordered the takedown of unauthorized AI-generated content. The current proceedings involve Shetty seeking broader injunctions against over 30 platforms. The court also addressed concerns about YouTube commentary on pending court cases, emphasizing the importance of verified reporting and the potential for unverified content to cause reputational damage.
