Summary
- Actors should consider backend returns over upfront fees.
- Prithviraj's model makes films affordable and financially viable.
- This strategy could solve many of the Hindi film industry's problems.

Filmmaker Sanjay Gupta has proposed that Bollywood adopt a production strategy pioneered by Malayalam actor Prithviraj Sukumaran to tackle its financial challenges. Gupta pointed out that Prithviraj often produces his own films, replacing his substantial acting fee with backend profit participation.
This method significantly reduces upfront costs, making the projects financially safer and more achievable. Gupta suggested this approach could resolve many of the Hindi film industry's persistent problems, rather than just discussing them.
Prithviraj's production house, Prithviraj Productions, has enabled him to maintain creative control and mitigate financial risks, backing projects like the science fiction thriller '9 (Nine)'. This model contrasts with the traditional high upfront fees common in Bollywood.
The actor has a busy schedule with upcoming films including 'i', 'Nobody', 'Varanasi', 'Khalifa', 'Daayra', and 'Odiyan'. His wife, Supriya Menon, also produces some of these projects. Notably, 'Daayra', co-starring Kareena Kapoor Khan, has recently set its release date.
