Australian rock icon Bob "Bongo" Starkie, a guitarist for the legendary band Skyhooks, has passed away at the age of 73. His death followed a brave battle with leukaemia, which ultimately claimed his life on Saturday morning. Starkie's daughter shared a poignant detail: her father departed peacefully surrounded by loved ones, with Chuck Berry's music as his final soundtrack.
Starkie joined Skyhooks in 1973, quickly becoming an integral part of the band's distinctive sound and flamboyant stage presence. Skyhooks achieved significant cultural impact in Australia, boosted by performances on the music television show Countdown. The band's enduring legacy was recognized with an induction into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 1992.
Earlier this year, Starkie's diagnosis with acute myeloid leukaemia was made public, prompting an online fundraiser for his medical costs. Despite his illness, he had hoped to reschedule live shows celebrating the 50th anniversary of Skyhooks' album 'Ego Is Not A Dirty Word'. Music remained a constant companion for Starkie throughout his life and even during his final days.
