On November 4th, 2025, the prestigious Berklee College of Music announced that it is awarding an honorary Doctor of Music degree to legendary singer-songwriter Bob Dylan. This marks the first time Dylan has received such an honor from an American college or university since 1970.
Berklee is recognizing Dylan's "extraordinary influence on modern music" and his "lifelong commitment to creative exploration." The school's president, Jim Lucchese, stated that "Bob Dylan's music has shaped how the world hears itself. He's an artist who has never stopped evolving, who keeps chasing truth through sound and language. That's the spirit we try to cultivate here every day."
In a statement, Dylan expressed his gratitude for the unexpected recognition, saying "What a pleasant surprise. Who knows what path my career might have taken if I'd been fortunate enough to learn from some of the great musicians who taught at Berklee. It's something to think about."
The school is also staging a special concert on November 8th, 2025, entitled "Watching the River Flow: A Roots Salute to Bob Dylan," featuring performances of his classic songs by students, faculty, alumni, and visiting artists.
